Harvey baskets explained

We have four main baskets into which we allocate stories as they are accepted. These baskets lead to themed editions of Harvey that are published quarterly. Any stories that we love, that don't fit into one of our existing baskets, may find a home in a catch-all variety collection. And every now and then we might throw out a call for a specific bonkers theme we like the sound of.

The main baskets are:

Steampunk

As much as we like the purest definition of steampunk (Victorian-esque steam-powered stories full of airships, monocles and cogs), we also love variations that delve into alternate histories, alternate energies and charismatic reimaginations along the lines of dieselpunk and whatnot.

Dystopian and Post-Apocalypse

Any timeframe or era, any catastrophe or cataclysmic goings on, we like dark, evocative, thought-provoking, character-driven and quirky.

By post-apocalypse/dystopian, we mean any apocalypse, any dysfunctional society, any genre if there's a disaster of some sort going on and people dealing with it... pre-during-post we don't mind... the more weird and obscure the better... the more wonderful will we be happy...

Dark and Urban Fantasy

Brutal settings, moral ambiguity, tough themes... we like our elves to be dark and preferably a bit singed around the edges, and our ducks to wield big swords.

Also incorporating urban fantasy, this includes magical realism, folk tales, supernatural, paranormal and spooky. We like stories that mix it up and surprise. We especially like tales that have a real grounding in mythology and folklore, twisting conventions and wildly imaginative but adding in a hint of fact and long accepted lores of old.

Sci-Fi

Probably our broadest basket, we love all sci-fi: military science fiction, near future, cyberpunk, space opera, alien invasion, action adventure, space opera...

Give us galactic war, emerging technologies, inter-planetary politics, space exploration, first contact and alien races, all mixed in with thought-provoking charismatic characters and intrigue and we'll be happy.

If you're not sure what basket your story fits in to, give us a shout. We reserve the right to change baskets and move stories at our discretion, but will check in with you if we do that.
